The Gospels: Full of Grace and Truth

As in the Days of Noah and Lot

Matthew 24:36-44; Luke 17:20-37

And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, “The kingdom of God comes not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:20-21)

  1. An earth-shattering STATEMENT

“But of that day and hour knows no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, not even the Son, but my Father only.” (Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32)

  1. Why didn’t Jesus KNOW?

And he said unto the disciples, “The days will come, when you shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you shall not see [it]. And they shall say to you, ‘See here; or, see there: go not after [them], nor follow [them].’” (Luke 17:22-23)

  1. False CHRIST

For as the lightning, that lights out of the one [part] under heaven, shines unto the other [part] under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.” (Luke 17:24)

  1. RAPTURE vs. second COMING
    1. Rapture
      1. Christ comes in the air
      2. Only his own see him
      3. Prior to wrath
      4. Can happen at any moment

    1. Second Coming
      1. Christ comes to the earth
      2. Every eye shall see him
      3. After wrath
      4. Scheduled and precise

“But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.” (Luke 17:25)

  1. Stealing their THUNDER

“But as the days of Noah [were], so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (Matthew 24:37-39)

  1. The days of NOAH

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also [is] flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were nephilim in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown. And GOD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. (Genesis 6:1-8)

“Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed [them] all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.” (Luke 17:28-30)

  1. The days of LOT

And the men said unto Lot, “Do you have any here besides yourself? Son in law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whatsoever you have in the city, bring [them] out of this place: For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.” And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, “Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city.” But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, “Arise, take your wife, and your two daughters, which are here; lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.” And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. (Genesis 19:12-16)

“In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot's wife.” (Luke 17:31-32)

  1. Don’t look BACK

And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, “Escape for your life; look not behind you, neither stay in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed” …. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:17, 26)

“Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Then shall two men be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two [women shall be] grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for you know not what hour your Lord comes. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ready also: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes.” (Matthew 24:40-44; Luke 17:33-36)

  1. RAPTURE or JUDGMENT

And they answered and said unto him, “Where, Lord?” And he said unto them, “Wheresoever the body [is], there will the eagles be gathered together.” (Luke 17:37)

  1. NEAR and FAR
    1. Possible interpretations
      1. The judgments of God fall where they are needed
      2. Where there is the most guilt and wickedness - Eagles gather where there is a prey
      3. Christ’s glorious coming at the judgment
      4. Romans coming to destroy Jerusalem in AD 70 - Eagle symbol of Rome
        1. The proverb has a far wider significance, and is illustrated by the rush of avenging forces whenever the life of a nation has fallen into dissolution and decay.
      5. Rapture - Body is Christ; Eagles are the church
      6. Harvest - Eagles are interchangeable with angels
    2. Seeing two sets of mountains in the distance
